Educational Services

The Educational Services Department operates five self-contained classrooms on its main campus:

  1. Journeys Classroom
  2. Voyages Classroom
  3. B.E.A.M.S./Voyages Classroom
  4. Detention Classroom
  5. Passages Classroom

Educational services also operates the Chanticleer Day School Program in partnership with Opelika City and Auburn City School systems.

All programs operate under the auspices of the agency's Chanticleer Learning Center (CLC). The CLC is a state-of-the-art comprehensive educational facility designed to meet the unique styles of 21st Century learners. CLC's mission statement is "Awakening A Yearning For Learning To Last A Lifetime".

Each CLC student receives individualized instruction from State Certified teachers as well as assistant teachers. The CLC operates year-round with periodic short school breaks. All classrooms are operated 8:00 A.M. through 2:00 P.M. daily. There is a minimum of an 8 to 1 ratio in each class. The Educational Services Department is led by the school principal who is a highly qualified, state licensed professional.

LCYDC teachers follow the Alabama State Course of Study in Math, Reading, Language, Social Studies and Science to ensure that students are confronting challenging content and measuring themselves against state-mandated performance standards. To further ensure this, the PLATO Learning System is used in all classrooms. Although LCYDC is not an official testing site for the administration of the GED, students are provided instruction utilizing GED and pre-GED materials and software. Employment skills, as well as independent living skills, are integrated into the core curriculum. A token economy is used as a behavioral management plan. This plan simulates the work environment where students earn a weekly paycheck and are required to keep a bank account and write checks. Physical Education is provided through contract with Auburn University. In addition, art is provided to most students through services provided by a contracted art instructor. Once every two weeks, one student is recognized and rewarded as the "Chanticleer Student of Distinction" based upon his or her overall performance.

At intake, students in the above noted six classrooms are administered the Wide Range Achievement Test-III or the Woodcock-Johnson III for diagnostic and placement purposes. Students who score two or more grade levels below their peers in any subject receive remediation in those areas. Remediation is conducted using a direct systematic approach with emphasis on procedures to expedite the student’s progress toward age-appropriate grade level. Emphasis in remediation is placed on acceleration of students through mastery of deficient skills so that grade level content can be successfully presented as soon as possible.

When possible, students in both short and long term programs are administered the Weschler Individual Achievement Test II or the Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children or the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale to determine academic potential and to identify areas of cognitive strength or weakness. In addition, students in the program receive a comprehensive educational evaluation that includes recommendations for the student’s academic and behavioral progress in the academic setting. All special education students receive specialized instruction as per their Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) and LCYDC is monitored regularly by the State Department of Education. Professional Development is maintained through close partnership with Opelika City Schools.
